Dr. Monta Madelane is an infectious diseases specialist from Gailezers Hospital in Riga, Latvia. She performed a 1-week ESCMID observership at Septic Surgery Unit at Charité-University Medicine Berlin.
"During my one week observership I had an opportunity to see and participate in daily activities at the Center for Musculosceletal surgery, including daily rounds, patient discussions, consultations in other departments, and also had a possibility to see how consultation services related to PJI for other hospitals works provided by the Center and PRO-IMPLANT Foundation.Monta Madelane, Gailezers Hospital, Riga, Latvia
I also had an opportunity to visit research laboratory where I was introduced to the ongoing research projects of new biomarkers for diagnostics and possible new treatments of joint implant infections.
I 've got better understanding of treatment tactics of PJI, diagnostic tools, and very importantly- collaboration between surgeons and infectologists.
Definitely, I've got more confidence for choosing some treatment options in specific patient groups. I will recheck local treatment guidelines of PJI as well as will introduce new tools for our hospital - like preoperative patient washing/ decolonisation and diagnostic tools for PJI and septic arthritis."
