"As a resident doctor in internal medicine I am supposed to manage correctly antibiotics, but it has been always a very difficult issue for me. I decided to do my external rotation as an ESCMID observer at the Center for Septic Surgery at Charité - University Medicine Berlin and it was, definitely, one of the best decisions I have made so far.
During my two months observership I had the opportunity to learn from a great team work which consisted of specialists in internal medicine and infectious diseases, microbiologists and orthopedic surgeons.
In the morning rounds we were doing, I was considered as a part of the team where I could clarify all my doubts about patients, antibiotic treatment, surgical procedures and also provide some suggestions.
After the morning rounds we had to resolve a lot of complex consultations from other departments like neurosurgery and cardiology with a lot of practical examples to continue learning about prosthetic infections.
During my observership I attended 2 workshops on Prosthetic Joint Infection organized by the team of PRO-IMPLANT Foundation and I had the great opportunity to present an interesting clinical case which we were managing in the septic surgery unit.
In each workshop there were different clinical presentations about new diagnostic approaches, surgical strategies and future possibilities of local antibiotic treatments.
After these two months, I finally started to understand the logic behind each antibiotic selection, different possible options and gained good knowledge about antibiotic treatment algorithms.
I would really like to thank Dr. Susanne Feihl, Dr. Susanne Georgi and Dr. Nora Renz who took the time to include me in their work and explained me with patience different clinical consultations. I would like to thank especially PD Dr. Med. Andrej Trampuz for making me feel welcome in the team as well as for being my new mentor in internal medicine and an inspiration to continue working hard and learning more about prosthetic infections."Donara Margaryan, Moises Broggi de Sant Joan Despí, Barcelona, Spain
