Following clinical studies to improve diagnostic procedure of prosthetic joint infections were initiated in 2015 at the Charité-University Medicine hospital with support of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the PRO-IMPLANT Foundation (PIF).
For this purpose a new joint puncture kit was developed and introduced in both the Mitte and Virchow-campuses of the Charité University clinic. The puncture kit was a clinic-wide success, as it facilitates an easy and standardized joint aspiration and has been since then adopted by several other clinics in Germany and Europe. Since 2015 a biobank with more than 500 samples of periprosthetic joint aspirate and native joint aspirate has been acquired.
