"I had the opportunity to spend two weeks as an observer at Center for Septic Surgery of Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery at Charité - University Medicine Berlin.
While attending ward rounds and reviewing patients in the outpatient clinic I was demonstrated the excellent organization of the interdisciplinary team made up of infectious diseases specialists and orthopaedic surgeons, which allows to achieve the best results in the field of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal and implant-associated infections. I was integrated in clinical case discussions and improved my knowledge of appropriate antibiotics therapy depending on the patient’s condition and antibiotic-resistance of pathogen. Some suggestions regarding treatment of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) will be considered to introduce in the Federal Center of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Endoprosthesis Replacement, Barnaul.
In the research laboratory I had the opportunity to see the use of modern technology such as PCR and microcalorimetry that allows identifying the pathogen in the shortest possible time compared to conventional methods. Therefore, it was very interesting to see development of the new methods of PJI treatment, such as bacteriphagues and different combinations of antibiotics.
In routine lab I was involved in processing various patients’ biomaterials who are suspected of infection complications. I got an insight of processing tissue samples, synovial fluid and sonication of explanted prosthesis. Such procedures have been performed in the laboratory of Federal Center of Barnaul since it was established, nevertheless I have noted some features that could be introduced in our SOPs.
I recommend to visit the Center for Septic Surgery to everyone who is dealing or is interested in musculoskeletal and implant-associated infections.
I am very grateful to Dr. Trampuz, Head of Center for Septic surgery as a great manager and talented physician for relevant counsel and helpful suggestions. I am also grateful to all staff at the Center of Septic Surgery and PRO-IMPLANT Foundation for friendly attitude and warm welcome."
